INSIDER INTERVIEW: Ornamental Things Jewelry

PrivyDolls are always on the prawl for a 'privy find' and you never know where you will find it. I am excited to share with you an adorable line but a designer that uses amazing trimmings to create timeless pieces. Pitchfork this year reinvented my love for Robyn and introduced me to Ornamental Things. I caught up with the designer to learn more about the fabulous line. Enjoy this great site dolls! Natalie is nice enough to offer PrivyDoll readers 15% off with coupon code: PRIVYDOLL.

Label/Company Name:   Ornamental Things
Name:  Natalie Tischler

3 words to describe your label:  Romantic, pretty and wearable

In your opinion what is next season’s trend? And how do you incorporate that in jewelry?
I am loving all the dark, moody, monochromatic colors in fashion this year.  I think I have carried that through with my current line because I have a lot of dark brass chains with rather Gothic pendants like the Night Flight necklace.

Your line is so unique, old meets new: do you stick to trends and collections?
I try to make jewelry that is classic enough to wear for years but I know that my work is  informed by what I see out in the world, on television and in fashion magazines.

What are your favorite materials to use? And where do you find most of the unique trimmings you use?
I use a lot of brass. I also love to use oxidized sterling silver and gold fill.  The charms and findings I use are sourced from many different places.  I travel a lot for work and for pleasure so where ever I go, I look for a bead shop, warehouse or flea market to find my components.  I also love to use vintage dead stock supplies when I can find them but they are getting more and more rare.

Favorite place for brainstorming and day dreaming:  In my backyard at magic hour.

What kind of press/marketing/celeb spottings has your line received? Diana Krall purchased one of  one of my one-of-a-kind vintage locket necklaces from a store here in Austin.  I sold a necklace with an antique keyhole and recycled chains on it to Erykah Badu at the Austin City Limits music festival.  And, I have sold a couple of necklaces to Janeane Garofalo at two different craft fairs.  I really admire all of these women so I am really honored.

I have had my jewelry featured on Daily Candy and in Bust Magazine as well as some local Austin magazines like Tribeza and Rare.  I’ve also had some great blog mentions here and there.

What fashion line does your Ornamental Things girl wear  to complement the line?
My jewelry works with everything from vintage and thrift store finds to cute dresses from Anthropologie or Betsy Johnson or a pair of Acne jeans with a tank top.

And Lastly, spill the Privy find:
Ornamental Things is available online at www.OrnamentalThings.com, at art and music festivals around the U.S. and in stores.  See my website for details on shows and stores.
